This little baby is only about 10 weeks old and only 4 lbs. She was found abandoned and scared by our shelter in Puerto Rico, El Faro de Los Animales. Once at the veterinarian’s office we found out that she had a diaphragmatic hernia and a broken leg!
A diaphragmatic hernia happens when the diaphragm which separates the abdomen from the chest tears and allows the intestines and other organs to move into the chest, compressing he lungs, and causing severe trouble breathing. You can see how winded she is but still manages to wag her tail to human voices.
She needs immediate surgery for her hernia and follow-up care. Our goal is to raise $4000.
Every bit helps, please help us help Atari.

We found him running loose in the streets of Rincon, Puerto Rico dragging a broken steel cable. Despite being completely matted and shaking his head because of his painful and infected ears, he immediately showed his goofy and friendly self. At the veterinarian's office, we found out that he is heartworm positive, is already showing signs of respiratory effort , and may also have some orthopedic issues.
Thank you; LEASH volunteers, Agualinda.com, Griselle Mendez, Dra. Lesley Rodriguez, El Faro de los Animales , our very generous donor who has pledged to help with his ongoing care. St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center. We can't do this alone but together we have given him a second chance.
Although he is safe, he still has a long road ahead. The treatment for heartworm disease takes months and can have serious side effects. Your donations can help offset the cost of his medical workup and flight home.

Went to the bakery for some bread and this amazing older girl greeted us outside. The staff said that she showed up barely walking about two months ago and they have been feeding her outside since then. A good samaritan has been medicating her on a regular basis but she continues to live on the streets. We are currently working with local rescues to get her to the states.
Update 1/16/19- After hours of looking for her and thanks to the endless dedication of two volunteers, she is safe and off the streets!!
Baby Girl is an older dog who will need a thorough medical workup to make sure that she is as healthy as she can be. Your donations will help offset the cost of her medical workup and flight home.

Because a great deal of our work is in Latin America, we have started a series of educational on-line courses in Spanish, for those working in animal welfare. We hope to provide caretakers with the tools they need to employ the best possible standards of care regardless of where they are in the world.
February 2019 - Round 3 of the Humane Society of the United States' Puerto Rico Spayathon. Volunteering with Veterinarians for Puerto Rico, our group spayed/neutered and vaccinated 979 dogs and cats bringing the overall total for all sites since June to 24,904!!! Amazing what we can do together.
June 2018 - Humane Society of the United States organized a spayathon for Puerto Rico, where 7-8 veterinary teams offered no-cost spay/neuter clinics throughout Puerto Rico. During the week of June 3-9th over 5,000 animals where spay/neutered and vaccinated throughout the island. Representing LEASH; Dr. Jessie Pazos, Dr. Ryan Keegan, and Daniel McKenna volunteered their time to this endeavor and will be returning for the next three rounds to be held; November 2018 and February and May of 2019. photos
Hurricanes Irma & Maria severely impacted the lives of people and animals in Puerto Rico. With the gracious funding from the JPB Foundation and assistance from St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center and El Faro de los Animales sanctuary, reunited almost 1000 pets with their families in the US. LEASH donated the website and design for the project puertoricoanimalunite.org . Dr. Pazos also volunteered on most transports, including our last one, accompanying two blind dogs travelling to New Jersey. These photos say it all....
On September 26, 2018 hurricane Maria devastated the island of Puerto Rico. The storm made landfall directly on the southeastern part of the island where our shelter, El Faro de los Animales is located. The effects of this storm are still felt today in those who lost loved ones, their pets, their jobs, and homes. photos
